The Caucus Releases a Statement on the Death of Shante Thompson

HOUSTON, TEXAS—The Houston GLBT Political Caucus is deeply saddened to learn that Shante Thompson and Willie Sims were killed last night in Houston’s Midtown area.   Shante joins the climbing number of Transgender women, mostly women of color, who have lost their lives to violence committed against them.

Safety is a real and warranted concern for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community.  For Transgender women, particularly women of color, that concern is amplified.  Unfortunately, the attack on the Trans community is ongoing. From lack of access to opportunity to the out-right denial of access to public spaces, the Transgender community has been the target of unwarranted attacks based on lies and misinformation.  This is evident by the onslaught of anti-LGBT, specifically anti-Trans bills, passing state legislatures throughout the south.  The effects of these lies are fatal and because of this, we continue to hear about women like Shante, whose lives are lost to violence.

As a community, we must ensure that we are vigilant in lifting up our community members and asking questions.  We must call on those in charge of investigating this crime to put the necessary resources in place to ensure that this senseless act of violence is fully investigated and there is justice brought for Shante Thompson.

We will be watching.  #Not1More  #StopTransMurders

The Caucus meets the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m.  The monthly meeting is held at the Montrose Center, Room 106, and 401 Branard St.  Visitors are encouraged to attend the monthly meeting to learn more about the Caucus.  For more information about the Houston GLBT Political Caucus, Caucus events, or volunteer opportunities call 713-521-1000, email info@thecaucus.org, or visit our web site at www.thecaucus.org
