The Caucus Releases its Statement on the Passage of Anti-LGBT Legislation in North Carolina and Georgia

HOUSTON, TEXAS—The Houston GLBT Political Caucus expresses its disappointment in recent actions taken by North Carolina with respect to eviscerating local nondiscrimination ordinances that include sexual orientation and gender identity. On Wednesday, March 23, 2016, lawmakers held a special session in which they created and passed a wide-ranging bill that invalidates a host of legal protections for LGBT individuals statewide.  North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory signed the bill into law late Wednesday evening, a few hours after the bill passed, even though he had thirty days to consider signing or vetoing the bill.

Additionally, we denounce the anti-LGBT law passed through the Georgia legislature that allows legal discrimination against LGBT people from faith-based groups and organizations. We strongly urge the Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal to veto the bill, as it allows legal discrimination against LGBT people.

The Caucus is keenly aware that local and statewide pro-equality legislation is necessary to ensure gay and transgender people are treated fairly and equally under the law.  While we are excited that the Equality Act has been introduced at the federal level, these protections do not currently exist, and thus local ordinances provide legal protections for the LGBT community.  Invalidating these protections allow legal bigotry to permeate society.

We call on the state of North Carolina to repeal this sweeping anti-LGBT law. Additionally, we call on the Governor of Georgia to veto the anti-LGBT bill sitting on his desk.

For the past forty years, the Caucus has endorsed candidates that will stand against discrimination and work to protect the rights of LGBT people.  The Caucus meets the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m.  The monthly meeting is held at the Montrose Center, Room 106, 401 Branard St.  Visitors are encouraged to attend the monthly meeting to learn more about the Caucus.  For more information about the Houston GLBT Political Caucus, Caucus events, or volunteer opportunities call 713-521-1000, email, or visit our web site at
